Olive oil is widely used in different cuisines across various cultures, mainly due to its immense health benefits for the body. But what people don’t know about this oil is that it can do wonders for the skin. Cold-pressed olive oil, made by compressing olives without the use of heat or chemicals to help it retains its natural properties, is loaded with antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, which are linked to boost moisture levels, replenish damaged skin, and prevent signs of aging.
Olive oil is used as a key ingredient in many beauty products, but it is best to use it in the original form for enhanced beauty benefits. To help us understand the ways we can incorporate olive oil into our skincare routine, we reached out to Arthi Raguram, Founder of Deyga Organics. Read on to know how to use this oil for healthy and nourished skin.
1. Olive Oil As A Moisturiser
Regular application of olive oil can give you soft, supple and glowing skin. Since the oil is rich in healthy fats and vitamin E, it binds moisture into the skin cells for long hours and prevent dry patches. Olive oil makes an excellent choice for people with dry skin since it maintains hydration without causing irritation as it is free of toxins. Olive oil can also help you reverse the damage caused by harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun on skin. Thus, application of olive oil prevents pigmentation, sun damage, dryness and dullness.
How to use:
Take some olive oil in your hands, rub it a little within your palms, and apply it in a circular motion on your skin. After 15 minutes, wash off the oil with lukewarm water. You can also apply the oil after cleansing and before applying makeup for a subtle glow.
2. Olive Oil As A Makeup Remover
Most of the makeup removers available in the market contain strong chemicals, that cause a lot of damage to the skin surface and disrupt skin pH levels. Regular use of toxic makeup removers may result in dry skin, pigmentation, irritation and acne issues. Olive oil can serve as a safe and inexpensive alternative to harmful, chemical-laden make-up removers. Since the oil is free of toxins, it does not cause any side-effects. The best part is that olive oil can be used on any skin type whether oily, dry, combination or sensitive.
How to use:
Rub olive oil on your face to melt the makeup. Take a cotton pad to remove the residue from the face. Use a gentle cleanser for completely makeup-free and clean skin.
3. Olive Oil For Anti-Aging
With gradual aging, our skin loses collagen and elasticity, which leads to formation of saggy skin, fine lines and wrinkles. Free radicals present in the environment can cause even more damage and lead to premature aging. However, olive oil can help reverse the signs of aging, making skin appear tighter and youthful. A well-moisturised skin is less prone to damage and aging, and olive oil application can help one achieve that. For best results, add olive oil in a face mask and apply it twice a week.
How to use:
Take some olive oil, yoghurt and honey and mix them well. Apply the paste on your face for 20 minutes until it becomes dry. Wash off the paste with lukewarm water.
4. Olive Oil As An Exfoliant
Use olive oil to remove dead skin cells and gunk accumulated in the skin cells. Since the oil has anti-bacterial properties, its application helps to kill bacteria responsible for acne and pimples. Besides, the oil does not clog pores so people with any skin type can use it for exfoliation.
How to use:
Take some salt or brown sugar. Add some olive oil and rub the paste on your skin for a few seconds. Wash face with lukewarm water.
