LG has taken an important initiative to provide relief to the inmates of all the 16 Central Jails of Delhi from the severe cold. Under this, instructions have been given to provide hot water to the prisoners lodged in Tihar, Rohini and Mandoli jails with immediate effect for bathing and cleaning. Prisoners above 65 years of age will be provided with a wooden cot, carpet and mattress in the jail.

The decision was taken by LG VK Saxena in a fortnightly review meeting for prisons to ensure that prisoners are provided with basic human needs. In the meeting, several undertrial prisoners were informed about the basic facility of hot water not being provided even in the bitter cold.

However, in many jails, a bucket of hot water is also being arranged for Rs 5000 in jail to influential prisoners. The LG has directed the Director General of Prisons and Principal Secretary (Home) to immediately provide hot water facilities to the inmates in all jails. This will give relief to those prisoners, especially the general prisoners.

There was a complaint from elderly prisoners about non-availability of mattress in jails. Because of this, problems related to bones were being faced in cold and being serious.

In view of the current situation, the LG has given instructions to immediately provide all necessary basic facilities to prisoners above 65 years of age. This will remove the neglect of human interests in prisons for a long time. Along with this, corruption in jails will also end.

Such services are often provided by the prison authorities, but influential inmates who can afford to pay receive most of the benefits. With this decision of LG, the prisoners in the jails will get great relief from the bitter cold.
